What Your Favorite Trinket Says About You

Everyone has a favorite "little guy". What does yours say about you?

Sometimes, the best things in life come in small packages. Everyone loves a cute little face,
whether it be that of a baby animal in a silly costume or a cherub with tiny wings on its
back. I’m talking, of course, about what Gen Z calls “trinkets”. Trinkets, knickknacks,
figurines, whatever you want to call them, there is a trinket for every kind of person.
Whether you want to put it on a keychain and attach it to your bag, or simply display it on a
shelf, your favorite trinket can reveal a lot about your personality. So, what does your
favorite “little guy” say about you?
Sonny Angel

Whether they’re hanging from your bag, perched on a shelf, or peeking out on top of your
laptop screen, Sonny Angels are sure to bring a smile to your face. Sold in blind boxes,
Sonny Angels come in a variety of teeny tiny little headgear shaped like fruits, veggies, and
animal heads.
If you collect Sonny Angels, you’re bold since you’re not afraid to have a bare ass on the
back of your laptop, but you also have a soft side and an appreciation for the classical arts
(think Renaissance and Baroque period paintings).
Calico Critters

Calico Critters, also known as Sylvanian Families outside of the US, have been around for a
long time. First introduced in 1985, many of you may have played with them in childhood,
making them ideal for trinket collectors who still have a bit of childlike whimsy in their
hearts. Often seen in cute little costumes and sometimes accompanied by props, Calico
Critters appeal to those who like to play dress-up.
If you’ve ever seen PEN15, you know that Maya and Anna love Sylvanian Families,
especially the Hamburger Wagon set. I like to think that Calico Critters are for the trinketiers like them, silly and spunky.
Smiskis

Don’t be fooled by their simple appearance. Smiskis are for some of the most playful and
creative trinket lovers. They of course come in blind boxes, so you are met with a surprise
every time. Their little bodies can form into the craziest of positions, and much like their
owners, are curious and like to explore. Though Smiskis like to hide, they manage to glow in
the dark. No matter how shy or outgoing they may be, Smiski owners stand out in a crowd.
Monchhichi

Monchhichis are for the OG trinket people, with the first Monchhichi released in 1974 in
Japan. After their US debut in 1985, they were established as international symbols of love
and friendship, spanning across generations of trinket lovers. Designed to be gifted, Monchhichis are for the “old souls”, not only for the vintage lovers of the trinket community, but for those whose love language is gift giving (or even receiving).
Labubu

Labubu lovers have a bit of an edge to them; they are creative, like to experiment with
fashion, and always have a mischievous smile on their face. However, the character of
Labubu is actually very sweet. Inspired by Nordic fairytales, he and his siblings are small,
kindhearted monsters who enjoy helping people, similar to Labubu fans.

Some may say that these are frivolous purchases. However, I beg to differ. What do all
these little guys have in common? They make people happy. We as humans are drawn to
these trinkets not because they are practical or necessities, simply because they evoke joy.
In a world full of negativity, these characters promote curiosity, kindness, and compassion.
Everybody should learn from them and do our best to be kind to each other while also
embracing our silly sides. So, the next time you’re feeling a little down in the dumps, treat
yourself to a little trinket, and remember: anything that makes you smile is worth a million
bucks.
